“Let’s do that song one more time, ok?”
Perquisite wants another take of an acoustic track he’s doing with Kris Berry. But things don’t go according to plan. As he repositions his cello between his legs, they start… only to find his instrument slowly turning off. His cello is electric and has run out of batteries.
Typical Rockstone Session, really. Expect the unexpected and be amazed. Luckily our executive producer Mark Boulas has some spare batteries with him, so Perquisite is good to go again.
Exclusive preview
Pieter Perquin, also known as the Dutch musician/producer Perquisite who’s worked with rapper Pete Philly, has recently teamed up with jazz singer Kris Berry for a special project. Rockstone Sessions was invited to Het Perron for an exclusive preview. Needless to say, they are awesome together. Her smooth, soft Norah Jonesy-voice blended with his characteristic cello made for an interesting new jazz-pop-sound.
They are performing with band at Het Perron (the platform) in Amsterdam, a tiny try-out bar that fits 30 people at most. Berry’s baked a lemon pie for the occasion, as today is a special day. It’s only the second time the duo is going to perform their new material for friends and family only.
Both are excited, but confident, as is their band. They fine-tune their way through the takes. Banter ensues, as guitarist Marnix casually comments:
“But seriously, I think that was possibly the best intro I’ve ever played. You won’t hear stuff like that again, you know.”
The barking fish. Wait, what?
Dinner time at De Blaffende Vis (‘the barking fish’, I know, when in Amsterdam). When we take the pair outside for a quick interview next to a kid’s playground, a few girls on the swings notice our gear and start yelling at us: “Are we gonna be on tv?” To Berry: “Are you famous!?” Berry can’t help but take a picture with them. If only they knew she’s on the North Sea Jazz Curacao bill with the likes of Usher and John Legend…well.
We head back inside and have the best spare ribs we’ve ever tasted. Unfortunately, we can’t attend the try-out, but in all fairness, we’d much rather wait for the album release party in a venue that fits more people to hear their tunes. Kris Berry and Perquisite, keep an eye out for those two.
