For most of the day, Metropolis festival-goers had endured some of the worst weather our beloved Dutch climate has to offer, all in the hope of seeing some of their favorite bands tearing up the Rotterdam stage. Towards the end of the afternoon, we decided to take our chances and go out for a stroll with UK folk band Bear’s Den. Having risen from the ashes of Andrew Davie and Kevin Jones’ former band Cherbourg, some of the band’s first songs saw the light of day following a period of isolation inside an old Glasgow mill. The band, who will soon be touring America in support of their most recent EP ‘Without/Within’, turned up in what seemed to be matching denim outfits, as according to them, ‘that’s what lads wear’. Once the band started playing though, their somewhat humorous, laid-back attitude made way for serious faces and a powerful intensity that has come to characterize the trio’s music over the past several years. As the afternoon drew to a close, we stumbled upon an abandoned football field, where the quieter surroundings proved ideal in doing the band’s beautiful, heart-felt songs justice.
