There’s something new going on in music video-land and it’s called ‘360°’. It’s a pretty epic way of recording music video’s in a way that makes you feel like you’re actually present at the set. Although there are already some clips out there, we have to admit that Rockstone Creatives made one hell of a video for the Dutch band Friends of the Family with their new track ‘Child Hands’.

fotf shoot 3The thing with 360° video is that it allows you to move your phone around and change your perspective of the location the video is shot at. So while you’re in the comfort of your own home, you may feel like you’re somewhere else! If you’re sitting behind a laptop, you need the keys W-A-S-D to move around.

Best part of this Rockstone Creatives 360° video is that it is shot in one take (even though a little bird told me it took 15 tries to get the right one) and obviously took a lot of walking around. Therefore, it wasn’t without dangers for the people involved; the director of the shoot took a literal leap of faith when encountering a huge ladder. He lost the battle, like many others who tripped and fell. It was very important to have an exact choreography in order to have people standing in the right place, without them falling. Also, every take they shot, the ideas changed. More and more attributes, accessories and moves were used with the passing of every take.

How to view the video

Smartphone: most of the smartphones nowadays allow you to move your point of view by simply moving your phone. Every movement you make has effect on the image direction. It’s possible to turn all the way around in every direction, just like you would expect from something that is called a 360° video. We preferred spinning around holding our phone but you can use your finger to change the view as well. If you’re unable to see it, you might want to do a few updates.

Desktop/ laptop: if your internet browser supports 360° videos you can turn the camera by using the next four letters: W-A-S-D. W = up, A = left, S = down & D = right.
If your internetbrowser does not support these videos yet you will see the video widescreen all 360° at the same moment. Turning yourself will not be possible then but of course you will be able to see everything just as good!
