Now the New Year’s eve hangover has subsided and our resolutions for the 2016 have already failed, it is time to put 2015 in perspective. Whether this is reviewing how many times Miley Cyrus did something weird, the occasions in which Noel Gallagher was an asshole, or the times Drake was being, well Drake. Rockstone Sessions joins the craze and presents you with, surprise, a list! But not just any list, we have created a list of twelve musical highlights, one for every month of 2015.

January

In January, Nicki Minaj featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. The picture that graced the music magazine was half decent and it might have been one of the few times this year Minaj got attention that did not feature around one of her many fueds (who could forget her famous “Miley, what’s good?” during this year’s VMA).

February

During the 2015 Super Bowl, Katy Perry performed the half-time show together with two sharks. The Internet blew up. Not necessarily about Perry’s (may we say trippy) performance or the presence of these sea-creatures, but because of the beautiful performance of the – now famous – left shark. The dancer that filled the costume of the left shark messed up his routine and won all of us over. He’s just so relatable. We all have a little bit of left shark in us.

March

In March of 2015, Carly Rae Jepsen released the music video for her song ‘I Really Like You,’ and I think we’re right assuming it surprised everyone when we learned Tom Hanks featured in it. I don’t really watch music videos, but somehow came across this one, watched it five times, and cried with laughter the first two times. But even if you don’t find it as hysterical as me (which I can totally understand), you have to admit it’s funny. It’s Tom Hanks. It’s Tom Hanks lip-syncing.

April

Remember the outfit Pharell Williams wore during the 2014 Grammy’s? That ridiculously awesome brown hat and a red leather track suit. That’s the outfit Pharell’s wax double is wearing. In April 2015 Pharell stood eye-to-eye with his look-a-like at Madam Tussauds in New York City. Pharell himself called the experience spooky, but we just found out the guy turned 42 years old this year. Talk about spooky. He looks no older than 25.

May

Jack White and Neil Young made history in May this year when they appeared on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. White brought a vinyl recording booth with him and Young performed a version of Willie Nelson’s song ‘Crazy’ inside the booth. The history was made when this song was recorded onto vinyl and pressed live on the show. Really exciting stuff for all those vinyl buffs out there.

June

In June 2015, Dave Grohl broke his leg during a concert in Sweden. He famously said “I think I broke my leg. I think I really broke my leg,” after falling off the stage. But after a quick trip to the hospital he came back and finished the concert rocking out on crutches. Talking about rock ’n’ roll. And though The Foo Fighters had to cancel some tour dates due to Grohl’s injuries, when they got back on the road it was including a throne fitting for the rock god Grohl is.

July

In July 2015 the world changed for the better when rapper Drake released his track Hotline Bling. I am personally not a huge fan of the song, but I wholeheartedly support what Drake has done for people who cannot dance. Drake made it possible for those with no game to enter the party scene, bust a move and not be laughed at. I am forever grateful.

August

In August the world was shocked. Teen sensation Justin Bieber released the first single of his new album and proved that all little boys grow up. Remember ‘Baby’? Of course you do, I just did this to get the song stuck in your head again. But those times are history. With his track ‘What Do You Mean,’ Bieber shocked lovers and haters alike. He may even have lost his haters once and for all. But just for old times sake, here’s a video of baby Bieber. You’re welcome.

September

By far the biggest highlight of September 2015 was Ariana Grande holding a giant bottle of perfume. Ariana Grande might not be that big, but that bottle was downright enormous. Enough said.

Oktober

For Halloween 2015, Taylor Swift dressed up as the Frozen character Olaf and performed ‘Let it Go’ with Idina Menzel. And with that teaches all of us a valuable lesson. If you ever feel ashamed of yourself in a certain situation, remember Taylor Swift wore an Olaf costume and things will seem not half as bad. Just let it go.

November

I don’t know if you are into country music at all, but if you are, you know that the industry is all about family values. The news that country music stars Blake Shelton (yes that dude from The Voice) and Miranda Lambert broke off their marriage shocked the entire country-loving world. But what happened in November of 2015 was maybe even more shocking to those in country-music-land. Since in that same month Blake Shelton and The Voice co-judge Gwen Stefani publically announced they were dating. Suddenly everyone that is anyone in this world had an opinion on it. Thank goodness Christina Aguilera approved. Twice. What would the couple have done otherwise?

December

America’s First Lady Michelle Obama proves to have serious game by dropping a rap track together with SNL actor Jay Pharoah. Michelle Obama has a history of showing up on American television to promote causes she’s passionate about. Remember the evolution of mom dancing she did with Jimmy Fallon to promote the ‘Let’s Move’ campaign. Leave it to the First Lady to ask attention for education in the most original way.

Happy 2016!
