Motel Mozaique is an artsy festival in Rotterdam that combines all the creatives into two days of happiness and exploring. Rockstone Sessions has been a fan of the festival for a while now, mainly because of the great musical talents that play in the different small venues. Of course we listed our favourites in an article, but we’re sure to discover many more hidden gems!

Thundercat, Friday 22.00 – 23.00, RS: Grote Zaal
2017 started out just fine, merely because Thundercat released his album Drunk. And whereas his last albums are darker than this one (wondering about the finiteness of life), it still goes up and down. Nonetheless, it’s amazing how Thundercat can address a very diverse public with his eclectic mix of different styles of music in one sound. Going from a smooth soul tune on the album to a sort of raw punk vibe in his live shows. Now, if that ain’t promising, what is?

Isaiah Rashad, Saturday 00.00 – 00.45, Bird
If you’ve been listening to our Soundcloud playlist, then you already know Hip Hop artist Isaiah Rashad. For me personally, this guy is one of the best discoveries in a long time. His sound is groovy, easy on the ears and his bars are relaxed.

Rex Orange County, 19.00 – 19.45, Arminius
Alex O’Conner is a young, crazy talented artist from the UK who recorded his first album Bcos U Never B Free in 2015 (being even younger, can you imagine? What were you doing at the age of 15? I bet it wasn’t recording an album), in his bedroom. Now he worked with BADBADNOTGOOD for the track ‘Uno’ and is releasing more and more catchy tracks.

The Lemon Twigs, Saturday 14.00 – 14.30, Armenius & Saturday 23.00 – 00.00, Rotown
For your piece of glitter and glam eighties rock you go to The Lemon Twigs. Two guys dressed in theatrical outfits will take you back to David Bowie, Queen and for what matters even Twisted Sister. Only their sound isn’t at all raw and experimental, but pretty harmonic and romantic. A bit like the lovechild of The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

Zebra Katz, Saturday, 02.00 – 02.45, Worm
When his fierce track with ruthless beats ‘Ima Read’ was released and used by fashion designer Rick Owens, Zebra Katz gained momentum. The track got remixed by dj’s and artists around the world. Zebra Katz, a.k.a. Ojay Morgan, is part of a movement called Queer Hip Hop that emerged around 2010, involving the likes of Mykki Blanco and Le1f. One thing’s for sure: this guy brings you rough beats that make you want to drop down and dance your filthiest moves.

ALA.NI, 16.00 – 16.30, Arminius & 21:15 – 22:00, Paradijskerk
Sounds old fashioned, but with a modern twist. ALA.NI’s sound has vintage vibe. It’s like you’re stepping into the musical era of you grandparents, when romance was alive and kicking and the world felt like a simpler place (well, if I must believe my own grandparents). That’s the great thing about music, ALA.NI can give you the same feeling without losing touch with the present. Escapism and romance, check her out!

Mahalia, Saturday, 19.30 – 20.15, Paradijskerk
This young singer-songwriter has a raspy, bright and pure voice that captivates from the moment she starts singing. Also, the location she’s playing (Paradijskerk) at Motel Mozaique has amazing acoustics that will enhance her sound even more. So if you’re on the look out for a proper date, this is it. Guaranteed success!

Happyness, Friday, 20.30 – 21.30, Worm
They self-released debut album Weird Little Birthday in the UK in 2014 and recently rleased their album Write In. Best described as dreamy rock, with a nineties feel, covered in a British sauce. But why bother on a proper description if the trio from London has a perfect way of saying what their music is all about: “Tender steak strips, peppers, onions; peace, love and kisses.”
